Jerome Doane Green

Jerome D (Jerry) Green, 89, passed from one life into the next on November 24, 2021, with his wife and youngest son at his side.  Jerry was born August 13, 1932 in Marlin, Texas to JD Green and Ollie Ethel (Chamberlain) Green.  Firstborn and only son, he was a loving older brother to his sisters Wanda and Sue.  The family later moved to Amarillo, where Jerry graduated from Amarillo High School (Go Sandies!) and attended Amarillo College.  Raised in the Baptist faith, Jerry was proud to claim kinship with Reverend Green, who, along with Reverend Wood, established the Greenwood Baptist Church in 1907 in the community that would soon be renamed Greenwood.  Growing up in the great depression, Jerry learned the value of hard work at an early age, and had many jobs through his life.  He was a faithful employee of Texaco for over 36 years, beginning in 1956, and moving from Amarillo to Midland as his career continued.  His retirement from Texaco in 1992 lasted long enough for him to get bored, so he began working at Premier Parking, driving the bus and managing the C store for over 10 years, always with a smile and a joke for the regulars that he came to know.  His proudest job and greatest accomplishment, however, was his marriage in 1963 to the love of his life, Frankye (Jody) Green.  They lived each day to the fullest for almost 59 years.  He was a wonderful father to both his sons, Jay and Jon, teaching and sharing the lessons learned throughout his life.  A veteran, Jerry entered the Army in 1953 and served his country in the Korean conflict as a member of the 23^rd Infantry Regiment, 168^th field artillery.  He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant and went into the reserves, where he remained until 1960.  After his return to Amarillo, his athletic skill allowed him a chance to play semi pro baseball for a time, and sports remained a large part of his life until his passing.  Jerry was heavily involved in all of his sons sporting endeavors, serving as coach for multiple football, softball and basketball teams while they grew up, as well as 2 terms as the President of the COM Swim Team Board of Trustees.  An ardent outdoorsman, Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family.

The greatest joy of his retirement years were the births of his grandchildren, Jordan Thomas (born on his and Jody’s wedding anniversary!), Jeremy Sullivan, and finally the “Little Princess”, Janet Elizabeth.

He is preceded in death by his father JD Green, mother Ollie Ethel, and youngest sister Sue.  He is survived by his wife Jody and son Jon of the home, eldest son Jay and wife Julie, and their children, Jordan, Jeremy, and Janet.  Also surviving Jerry are his sister Wanda, and many nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.  Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the City of Midland Swim Team, 3003 N. A St.; The Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org), St. Luke’s UMC in Midland (www.stlukesumcmidland.org), Hillcrest School (www.hillcrestschool.org), or a charity of one’s choice.

For I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
