Imogene Ledbetter Evans, 104, formerly of Stanton, Texas passed away on August 31, 2021 in Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends at The First Methodist Church, Stanton, Texas from 1 to 2 PM Friday, September 3. Funeral services will follow at 2 PM at the church, with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland afterwards.
Imogene was born on June 2, 1917 to Ben Turner Hale and Irene Evalena Hickman Hale in Howard County near Coahoma, Texas. She was the youngest of their eleven children, and took great pride in being the only one in her family who was able to complete a college education. She held a job or two after graduating, then entered her long career as an elementary teacher where she influenced the lives of thousands of students. She wasn’t too fond of teaching middle school, though. She was once asked by her Stanton school superintendent if she’d be willing to move from teaching kindergarten to Jr. High. She jokingly said, “I didn’t even like my OWN kids when they were in Jr. High.” In addition to that ever-present sense of humor and her skills as a teacher, she was an amazing cook. The kind that rarely used a recipe. She loved vegetable gardening and was an awesome seamstress from a very young age. She had natural talent as a painter, and became a talented China painter later in life. She was also known among family and friends for her strong opinions-whether or not you agreed with them!
Imogene’s first husband was Alton Lee Ledbetter, and they had two children together, Ronald Lee and Eva Eulene (Sis). Alton passed away in 1978, and several years later, she married Lonnie Leander Evans. They had a wonderful time together traveling to many places around the world.
Imogene is survived by her son, Ron of Pasadena, Texas, son-in-law, Randy Robinett of Blackwell, Texas, step sons and daughters Dan and Barbara Evans of Arkansas, Robert Evans of Allen, Texas, Lonnie and Barbara Evans of Austin, Texas, and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, her daughter Sis, six sisters and four brothers.
