Coy Lee Cook born July 6 1940 to C. L. and Hazel Cook in Big Spring, Texas.

Coy passed away Tuesday, August 17th at the age of 81 years.

Coy’s life’s work revolved around music. He was extremely proud of his time in the “Going Band from Raider Land.” He was a true Red Raider Rooter. He was a school band director for 29 years in Paducah, Wilson, Sunray, Plains, and Sterling City. Coy loved music and teaching students to love music.

Coy was a faithful Christian and frequently talked about all the treasured friends he had made worshiping God in church services and fellowship times spent together.
Coy was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Ray Cook, Wayne Cook, Bernard Cook and Gene Cook.

He is survived by his wife, Karen of the home; and two daughters, T’auna Ramsey and husband Brett of Big Spring, Texas and Maranda Ribera and husband Rick of Spicewood, Texas; Coy’s greatest joy were his three grandkids, Tristan Pail Ramsey of Missoula, Montana, Kincade Coy Ramsey of Lubbock, Texas and Zona Maddison Ramsey of Lubbock, Texas.

Coy suffered with multiple sclerosis for most of his life, but when asked how he was, he would say, “I can’t complain!” Coy’s wish was that his body be donated to medical research to help others struggling with MS. His body has been donated to Texas Tech Heath Sciences for MS research.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to, Sunset Institute of Biblical Studies in Lubbock, Texas, Camp Blue Haven, Las Vegas, NM, Multiple Sclerosis Society & Research, or Greenwood Band Scholarship Fund.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. A special thank you to John Foster, M.D. for helping Coy live an extended life.

Coy was an excellent teacher and band director. My sympathy to his family.

Most of my wonderful memories of high school are my band memories with Mr Cook and Mr Ferguson. The music,the band contests, marching, the state solo ensemble trip. More importantly he was a great christian influence on so many young lives! He was an amazing and caring person. Love and prayers to Karen,T'Auna(almost the flower girl at my wedding. She was so little she got too afraid to walk down the aisle) and Maranda. Keep your memories close.

Great memories of Mr. Cook, he was an awesome teacher and friend. Karen prayers lifted for you and your Family. Sending hugs!

Mr. Cook , as he will always be remembered by me, was an awesome band director. He expected greatness from his band members. The Fighting Bobcat Band had him to thank for so many Sweepstake years.. Blessings to the family and thank you for sharing him with a bunch of crazy Jr. High and High School students..

My best memories of high school were of my time in the Mustang band. Practicing for the halftime show during band class, the students sometimes getting mixed up, the formation falling apart, and Mr. Cook sitting down on the ground and putting his face in his hands—we never wanted to disappoint him because we all loved him so much. And then the times we would get it right and win a No. 1 rating—he would be so proud of us because he loved us. Truly, he was a dear, sweet man who instilled a love of music into his students. The world is a better place because of his presence among us. My deepest sympathies to Karen and the rest of his family.

Had the great opportunity to be one of his students, (in those days, at Wilson, started in the 8th grade) we won Sweepstakes three years...in a row. There were also several students that went on to do some great things.

When asked about the teacher who made a difference in my life, my answer has always been Mr. Cook! I often think about listening to our band’s contest recording and hearing him humming! I remember his smile except during contest season! ‘Mr. Cook’ has been an inspiration to countless students - job well done sir!

My heart is breaking for all of you. Mr. Cook ( I could never call him by his first name) was an influence on many lives. Band was always my favorite subject. He made it fun even while we were marching in the heat or the cold. His influence on my life and many others will always be treasured.

I love you all so very much and will forever love Coy💖I looked up to him, he was a true hero to me in my daily battle with MS!

Dear Karen, I was surprised and saddened when Tim Jones told me of Coy's passing. He was such a dear friend to us. I will remember fondly the many "band" conversations we had over a cup of coffee or lunches when we worked together in the Midland store. He always had a smile for customers and co-workers. Praying for peace and comfort for Karen, T’ Auna, Miranda and families. Thrilled I had him for a band director. Mr. Cook was such an inspiration and kind soul. Loved getting to see him at OAP and in the Midland, Coahoma & Big Spring area over the past 27 years. Hugs and prayers for all.

I have some wonderful memories of Mr. Cook. He touched so many with his love of music. He was my band teacher in Sunray.

He was an inspiration to me for a certain time. I thought more than once of becoming a band director to follow in his footsteps. There was a plaque at high school on display for a music award that had his name as the first recipient. I strived to have my name added as well and came close, but sadly failed. He never knew this. Rest in Peace, Uncle Coy.
