A greater man I have not met. Many memories remain, quail hunting, mule deer hunting, training dogs. hearing him scream as snow blew under the outhouse, playing catch - giving him 4 Allstar tickets for the grand opening of Arlington Stadium...just sitting in his 'shed' reloading shotgun shells and learning about baseball and Texas plants & wildlife. A remarkable man.

For 40 years Ernie and I and a few river buddies fought Indians and outlaws, told tall stories, relived every Lee football and baseball game ever played, fished, hunted, burned wood, traveled the valleys and mountains, attended high school games all over the state of Texas, and became life long great friends. He loved God, family, black labs, A&M, baseball, Lee Rebel everything, friends, Western history, hunting and fishing, Ernie had hundreds of "best friends". I am grateful that I am one of them.

It was my pleasure to have been a co-worker with Coach Johnson at Lee High School in Midland. He was one of the most professional educators I had the pleasure to work with. He will be dearly missed by the many lives he touched over the years, and I am pleased to say he had a major impact on me and my career. RIP Coach Johnson.

I grew up living across the street from The Johnson's. His kids went to school with my brothers & I and my oldest brother played baseball for many years under Coach Ernie. I always thought the Johnson family was the Leave it to Beaver family of the block. Susan, Karen and Lee, you are all in my thoughts and prayers and sending my love and hugs from afar.

I am fortunate to have played baseball at Lee HS for Coach Johnson in 1970 - 71, and I credit him for not only preparing me to play professional baseball, but also for preparing me for life in general. I learned more about baseball from Coach Johnson than I learned during eight years of minor league baseball. Coach Johnson did a great job teaching the physical skills of baseball, like fielding, hitting and throwing, but the most important skills he taught were the lifelong skills of teamwork, perseverance, competition, sportsmanship, hard work, and integrity. We have lost a great man and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Susan, Karen and Lee.

Being a caregiver for Mr. Johnson and his wife was such a blessing to me. I found love from them both that was so precious and I will cherish many wonderful memories as long as I live. God be with his loved ones and friends, mend their broken hearts, dry their tears and give them comfort. 🙏

I have known Ernie for 41 years ever since I came to Midland to be the General Manager of the Midland Cubs. Ernie was my Concession Manager. We became life long friends. Everyone has said it all about his tremendous career. However, the thing I remember most was his ethics in business and life itself. I have never known Ernie to swear or tell an off-color joke. He always had love for his family, friends and of course, the Aggies. I will miss him dearly. Rest in peace my friend!

What an awesome coach and mentor to so many of us that came through Lee High School!! I have fond memories of him as a teacher and coach during my high school years of 74-77. He was my JV football coach and baseball coach during that time. I don't remember a harsh word spoken but he "enthusiastically encouraged" many times. I still to this day, kick a glass that I drop or anything else breakable to skim it across the floor to keep it from breaking as learned from his demonstration of dropping a test tube in science class! I kept my west Texas leaf and wildflower collection for years as well. Please accept my condolences to the Johnson family.
