Herbert Boles

Herbert F. Boles, beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather, departed this world on December 11, 2020 to be reunited with his dearly departed wife, Norma Jean Hubbard Boles.  “Bud” as he was known by many, was born in Canadian, Texas on December 29, 1926 to Floyd Boles and Sybil Henderson Boles and passed away in Midland, Texas.     

Bud graduated from Lubbock Senior High School in 1944, where he played football, ran track and held the State Record for the fastest time running the low hurdles. He continued his education at Texas Tech. After his first semester at Texas Tech, during the latter part of World War II, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and applied for officer training.  The war ended and he was honorably discharged in 1945.

After his time in the Navy, he returned to complete his degree and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1952. After graduation, he accepted a position in Midland with Hunt Oil Company. In Midland, he met his beloved wife, Norma Jean Hubbard. They were married 57 years until her passing on August 8, 2011. Bud and Norma were blessed with sons, Bob and Greg and daughter, Kathy.

Bud and Norma Jean later moved to Oklahoma City, OK where he accepted a position as Division Landman for British American Oil Producing Company.

In 1960, Bud accepted a position as Vice President of Exploration and Production for APCO Oil Company in Oklahoma City. During time spent in Oklahoma City and while employed by APCO, he attended law school and held a Juris Doctorate degree from the Oklahoma University School of Law. He is a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the Oklahoma Bar Association.  While at APCO, Bud traveled internationally and was responsible for exploration efforts resulting in oil and gas discoveries in Argentina and the North Sea. In 1975, Bud and Norma Jean returned to Midland, where he continued his career as General Manager of Leonard Resources and later as an independent oil man.

In 1991, Bud joined Corporate Finance Associates (CFA) an international investment banking firm where he served as Chairman of the firm’s energy practice group and formed close relationships with many clients and colleagues.

Bud was a wealth of knowledge, always willing to stop to share his experiences by answering a question or helping someone in need. He loved all facets of business and continued to go to his office well into his 90’s. He will be greatly missed and leaves behind a lasting legacy.

When Bud wasn’t working, he was active in the community. He was a strong believer in our Lord and steadfast in his faith. He could always be found Sunday mornings at First Presbyterian Church of Midland where he faithfully served in many capacities including as Deacon and Elder. He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, American Association of Petroleum Landmen, Permian Basin Landman’s Association, West Texas Geological Society, Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientist (SIPES), Midland Scottish Rite Association, The Minuet Club, Petroleum Club of Midland, and a Past President of both the Midland Country Club and the Oklahoma City Association of Petroleum Landman. In 2017, Bud was the recipient of the Top Pioneer Award from the Permian Basin Petroleum Pioneers. In 2019, he received the Special Honorary Member Award from the Exchange Club of Midland.

Bud loved life and was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, golf, tennis and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his son, Gregory H. Boles and older brother, Dr. Truett C. Boles.

Bud loved his family and is survived by a son, Robert O. Boles and his wife, Erin Boles of Dallas, TX, and daughter, Kathy Boles Anderson and her husband, Mike Anderson of Dallas, TX and four grandchildren: Brittany Boles, Michael Anderson, Brandon Boles and Hadley Anderson. He is also survived by a nephew, Dr. Chris Boles, and family, of Bedford, MA, niece, Dr. Rebecca Boles of Arlington, TX, brother-in-law, Orman J. Hubbard and wife, Bonnie Hubbard of Midland, TX and nieces, Staci Hubbard of Austin, TX, Paige Gates of Midland, TX, and Amy Mullen of Charleston, WV and their families.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to T J. Pickett, Dr. Michael Miller and staff, and caregivers who have been a constant source of support.

Honorary pallbearers are Orman Hubbard, Ronnie Williams, Earl Sebring, Roy Williamson, Chris Boles, Brandon Boles, Mike Anderson, Michael Anderson Jr., Chris Mullen, Bill Chancellor, Flynt Chancellor, and Tracy Chancellor.
