Olive Memorial Park.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the funeral home.Art was born on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1938, in Big Spring, Texas. He graduated from Coahoma High School and was active in FFA and raised hogs. He attended Texas Tech University for three years where he was the first music major to be given a track scholarship. He majored in both brass and voice and sat 1st chair tuba in the Tech band as a freshman. He graduated from University of Texas in Arlington with a degree in music education.Art served in several Baptist churches as minister of music before becoming an ordained Baptist Minister, and he served as pastor in several Texas cities.Art was the youngest boy at 13 to earn the Eagle Scout award and added 4 badges to that award. It included the pioneer badge that required him to live a great number of nights outdoors and live one week at the West Texas Scout Ranch for a week, living only on the native growth. While on a trip with the scouts on the Concho River, Art captured a baby raccoon. It became a special pet, and he named it Ginger because he loved Ginger Snaps. When let out of its cage Ginger climbed up Art and placed his front paws around his neck.Art was a wonderful son and did all he could to help his mother. After his divorce he came back to Big Spring and eventually lived with his mother.Art is survived by his mother, Mamie Lee Dodds of Big Spring; a daughter, Kerry Martin of Royce City; a son, Dennis Dodds and wife, Holly of Greenville; three grandchildren, Amanda Mendoza and husband, Josh, Alison Pike and husband, Zeb both of Greenville and Chase Martin of Roanoke; and three great-grandchildren.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory.
