Leo Preston Whitfield, 86, of Midland passed away on January 29, 2015. Visitation will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home on Friday, February 6, 2015, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 1:00pm with interment following at Fairview Cemetery.Leo was born in La Fruta, Texas on May 11, 1928 to James W. and Willie T. Whitfield. He grew up in a large family of seven brothers and two sisters. After graduating high school, Leo entered the United States Marine Corps. He was a proud World War II Veteran and several of his family members joined the military in his footsteps. After he was honorably discharged in 1948, Leo and his soul mate, Naomi Joyce Terrell, began planning their future together. On August 5, 1949, Leo and Joyce were married. They had five daughters, Sherry, Marilyn, Linda, Donna, and Karen. Leo was an incredible father and his five girls were his pride and joy. He was a true, old fashioned patriarch and what he said needed to be done never found an argument. He was a charming man with a great sense of humor and an entertaining wink of the eye to go along with every joke. He enjoyed ‘shooting the breeze’ and all of his stories were told on ‘Whitfield time”- which always meant you should clear your afternoon if you were spending it with Leo. He was a good man and had an incredible work ethic. Much of his time was spent welding, laying pipe, and being a traditional cowboy. He wasn’t afraid of hard work or getting dirty. Leo was a man of God, first and foremost, and a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend second.Leo is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Whitfield; daughter, Sherry and husband, Ronnie Harris of Midland; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Buz Sanders of Canyon Lake, Texas; daughter, Linda Wadsworth of Throckmorton, Texas; daughter, Donna Fleming of Tyler, Texas; brother, Billie and wife, Carylin Whitfield; son-in-law, Mike Henderson; seventeen grandchildren; thirty seven great grandchildren; and twenty great great-grandchildren.He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Willie Whitfield; daughter, Karen Henderson; and his grandson, Kelly E. Murphy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
