Joan Barber Gainey, 80, of Big Spring, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at her residence. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, May 12, 2014 at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Mark Lindsey, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Monday at the Colorado City Cemetery, Colorado City, Texas.The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.She was born September 4, 1933 in Colorado City, Texas and married Harold Gainey September 14, 1951 in Westbrook, Texas.Joan graduated as Salutatorian of Westbrook High School in 1950 and won a trip to Chicago in 1949 as the Gold Star 4-H girl in Mitchell County. She attended Howard County Junior College. She moved to Monahans after marrying and reared her family there. She worked as the secretary at Walker Junior High School for 24 years and moved to Big Spring in 1989. She was a loving wife and mother and was known as “Jannie” to her grandchildren.She was a member of First Baptist Church in Monahans and taught Sunday School for many years and was currently a member of First Baptist Church in Big Spring.Survivors include her husband, Harold Gainey of Big Spring; two sons, Ronnie Gainey and wife, Brenda of Big Spring and Glenn Gainey and wife, Jeanie of Kermit; six grandchildren, Sandra Gainey Dunbar and husband, Rick of Arlington, Dr. Paige Gainey of Dallas, Nick Gainey and wife, Jami of Rowlett, Taylor Gainey of Eastland, Trent Gainey and Allyson Gainey both of Brownwood; and one great-grandson, Beau Alan Gainey of Rowlett.She was preceded in death by her parents, Doug and Ruth Barber.The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 705 W. FM 700, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or to Dora Roberts Rehabilitation, 306 W. 3rd St., Big Spring, Texas 79720.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory.
