George E. Moore passed away March 31, 2014, at his home in Midland. He was born in Bryan, Texas, to Dorothy and William J. Moore and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. He received a bachelor and master degree in geology from Texas A & M University where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets and Tau Beta Pi.\tAfter graduation he served a stint in the Army and later the Army Reserves, reaching the rank of captain. Upon discharge he received a commendation for his service.\tFor thirty-one years George was employed as a senior consulting geologist by Union Oil Company of California. After retirement he spent summers in Ouray, Colorado where he enjoyed producing field guides and leading field trips in the San Juan Mountains. He wrote a guide for exploring the geology of the area entitled Mines, Mountain Roads, and Rocks which is now in its second publication. He was heavily involved in the Ouray County Historical Society as a board member and fundraiser. He was instrumental in cataloging a large book collection, the Ross Moore Library, containing information on mining techniques, mining equipment, geology and the history of the area. George loved the San Juan Mountains but sometimes felt the need to see the horizon of his beloved West Texas.\tHe was a Certified Professional Geologist by the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists. George was a member of the Geological Society of America, American Association of Petroleum Geologists for fifty years, Society for Sedimentary Geology, Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, New Mexico Geological Society, and West Texas Geological Society. He was presented the Pioneer Award by the West Texas Geological Society.\tHe was a member of the United Church of the San Juans, First United Methodist Church of Marble Falls and First United Methodist Church of Midland. At the church in Midland he was on the missions board, a member of the Partners class, lay leader for numerous Walk to Emmaus retreats, Stephens Ministry, and Boy Scout leader for Troop 152.\tGeorge was preceded in death by his father William J. Moore and his first wife, Linda Kirkland Moore. He is survived by his wife Glenda Chapman Moore, his mother Dorothy Moore, his sons, David Lee Moore and his wife Nia of Midland and Daniel Edwards Moore of Dallas as well as stepchildren Brian Files of Houston and Erica Adams of Jackson Springs, N.C. Other survivors are his sisters, Mary Schlieker and husband R.H. of Temple and B.J. Fox and husband David of Bryan. His grandchildren are Burk Arthur Moore and Georgia Kathryn Moore of Midland.\tA memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel, 3800 N.
