Winnie Lou Chambers, 92, of Midland, passed away at her home in Arlington on February 25, 2014. She was born on August 27, 1921 in Vashti, Texas to James “Jim” Godfrey and Lila Porter Joplin.Mrs. Winnie made her commitment to Christ, as a 17 year old young lady, at a “brush arbor” revival meeting that was being held on her parents’ property. She graduated from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, TX in 1939 where she was an avid and excellent volleyball player. After high school she worked in Wichita Falls where she met her future husband, Foy. They were married on June 12, 1941 and later moved to Fort Worth. While living in Fort Worth, she became a true “Rosie the Riveter” at Consolidated Aircraft, building airplanes that were used in World War II.As a true oilfield wife, she relocated many times during her marriage. And, as a true Christian, she was always active in a local Baptist church in every place that the family lived. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Girl’s Auxiliary leader, WMU officer and /or Nursery worker in most of the churches.After many years of moving in and out of Midland, she and Foy, made Midland their permanent home. They joined Fannin Terrace Baptist Church in 1978. In her later years, Mrs. Winnie was a member of a singing group, Just Folks, for over 10 years. This group did several “gigs”, as she called them, at nursing homes, churches, VA hospitals and other organizations in the Permian Basin area.She is known by her family and friends for her quick wit and her wonderful cooking. Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and Friend, she will be missed by all of those who were part of her life.Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Payne of Middleton, TN; granddaughter, Michelle Redden of Arlington, granddaughter, Traci Ray of Arlington, grandson, Roger Payne of Illinois, great granddaughter, Emma Redden of Arlington and great grandson, Roger Payne, Jr. of TN.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Foy O. Chambers, a daughter, Kathryn Townsend, three brothers, Sid Godfrey, George Godfrey, and James Leroy Godfrey, two sisters, Lillie Carter and Sue Martin. ,
