Janet Florer, 69, of Midland, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011. A rosary will be held at 7:00 pm, Monday, May 16, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at St. Ann's Catholic Church.Janet was born September 9, 1941 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated in 1959 from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City and attended Iowa State University. Janet worked as a flight attendant for Braniff International from 1962 to 1965. Braniff terminated her employment on Janet's wedding day, September 4, 1965 because Braniff had a policy that stated female employees could not work as flight attendants and be married. She lived in Dallas from 1962 until 1977, when she moved to Midland.Janet was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society, since 1982, serving as the president from 1989 to 1990. She was also a member of St. Ann's school board and served as co-chair for the annual family fair in 1982. She was a Midland Memorial Hospital auxiliary member from 1985 to 2004, serving as treasurer from 1987 to 1989 and president from 1990 to 1991. She worked 7,118 hours in Midland Memorial Hospital's gift shop. She also walked over 25,000 miles as a mall walker. She was also a CASA advocate. Survivors include husband, Neil Florer of Midland; children, Timothy Florer and wife Sharrianna and granddaughter Robin, all of Austin, Thomas Florer of San Antonio, Dr. Christine Florer of Austin, and Robert Florer and wife Mary and grandsons Zachery and Kyle, all of Bridge City, Texas and Jesse Smelser of Dallas; sisters, Shirley Tramp of Dakota City, Nebraska, Wanda Smelser of Sioux City, Iowa and Cyndi Miller of Spirit Lake, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; and the family dog, Choco, who slept by Janet's side during her entire illness.She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Smelser and sisters, Jeri Spars and Diane Churchill.A special thanks to the St. Ann's care and share group for their support during this difficult time.
