Ernestine Herring Schroeder, 91, of Big Spring, died on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel, Big Spring with Rev. Byron Brown, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM Monday at the Aspermont Cemetery, Aspermont.Born on October 13, 1916 in Aspermont, Ernestine was the youngest of five daughters of Stonewall County pioneers, Ernest Herring, prominent attorney, and Nell Sanders Herring, music teacher. As an honor student in Aspermont Schools from start to graduation, she was active in track, baseball, trampoline, volleyball and basketball team captain. After high school graduation, she went to Draughons Business College in Lubbock. She worked as secretary and bookkeeper for Federal Land Bank in 1934 and moved to First National Bank in Aspermont in 1936 where she worked until February 1943, the latter years as assistant cashier and chief teller. She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps as a secretary. She left there the last of August to move to San Diego, California where she married her longtime sweetheart, Leon Schroeder from Sagerton, Texas who was stationed in San Diego in the Navy. She worked as secretary for the Navy in San Diego, the Army at Camp Barkeley, Texas, Pyote Air Force as administration officer in personnel and executive secretary for civil service. She worked at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring as secretary to several commanders, before retiring.She was a life member and sometimes president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and a Baptist. Her hobbies were dancing, crafts, bowling, coin collecting, fishing and hunting. Survivors include, her nephew, Jim Dennis of San Diego, California; her nieces, Helen Cameron of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mary Louise Francis and Sharon Crowell of Carbondale, Illinois; her very special in-laws, Patsy Schroeder of San Angelo, Murry and Ruby Schroeder of Abilene and Jim and Katie Schroeder of Corsiciana and very special friends, George and Irene Wilson and Celestino and Helma Cisneros all of Big Spring and Junior and Jerry Martin of Aspermont.She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Schroeder; her parents, four sisters, Margaret Dennis, Elizabeth Hahn, Mildred Herring and Nell K. Hutchison and also by her beloved nephew, Herring Dennis. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
