W.L. (Squeaky) Thompson, 87, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, June 23, 2002, in Stephenville. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Watson, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. He was born on August 14, 1914 in Hico, Texas and married Marguerite Parker on December 3, 1939 in Brownwood, Texas. She preceded him in death on November 21, 2001. Squeaky moved to Big Spring in 1927 with his family and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1934. In 1933, he started to work for Barrow Furniture Company and then opened Thompson Furniture and Carpet in 1956, operating it until retiring in May of 1997. He attended First Christian Church. A member of the Evening Lions Club since 1956, he served as the president for four terms. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for his many contributions to the Lions Club and also served in many capacities in District Lions Club. He had served as city commissioner from 1962 to 1966 and was also a past president of the Eagles Lodge and Big Spring Jaycees. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Cookie Thompson of Stephenville; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann and Marvin Simmons of Houston; two grandchildren, Scott Simmons of Port Aransas and Catharine Thomas of Houston; three great grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Lucy Bob and Paul Turner of Brownfield. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Annie Thompson and by two sisters, Lois Wiswell and Jane Anderson. Pallbearers will be R. H. Carter, Bill Birrell, Jerry Currie, Jerry John Currie, E. C. Bell, George Weeks and Danny Kirkpatrick. Honorary pallbearers will be all past and present Lions Clubs members. The family suggests memorials to: the Lions Club, P.O. Box 247, Kerrville, Texas 78029-0247 or to the First Christian Church, 911 Goliad, Big Spring, Texas 79720.
