Vic Ames, 79, of Big Spring, died on Thursday, January 31, 2002, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary with Rev. Stan Hanes, minister of Music and Education, officiating. Interment will follow at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas. He was born on November 16, 1922 in Havana, Illinois and married Edna Hazlewood on January 3, 1944 in San Anselmo, California. Vic was raised in Havana, Illinois and graduated from high school there. He volunteered and entered the Army Air Force, serving during World War II. He was a P38 Fighter Pilot with the 364th Fighter Group, 383rd Fighter Squadron based in England. On his 15th mission, he was shot down over Germany and was a POW for 1 year. He went to work for civil service in 1948 and came to Big Spring in September of 1957 from Houston. He worked at Webb Air Force Base until retiring on December 31, 1977. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was a life member of the Permian Basin Chapter of POW's, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the Caterpillar Club and a member of Texas Baptist Campers on Missions. Survivors include his wife, Edna Ames of Big Spring; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Mary Ellen Ames of Montgomery; two sisters, Lois Ames and Linda McFatridge of Albuquerque, New Mexico and two granddaughters, Cheri Ames of Anderson, South Carolina and Casey Ames of Ft.
