Joan Carol Haynie, the only daughter of William and Leona Breneman, was born in San Francisco, California on June 16, 1935. It was during her early childhood that she learned to be the strong, self sufficient person that would be her trademark throughout her life. Joan's father was a Merchant Marine and her mother was a devoted wife, and it is in those facts, along with the sights and sounds of San Francisco, that would be her greatest influences. It was in the City by the Bay that she learned to appreciate the little things of life, such as delicate coffees, and hard Italian salami. In the early 1950's, Joan would meet her first husband, which would lead to the birth of her first son, Paul Stevens McHenry. But by 1953, Joan would meet and marry Silliman Evans Haynie, a Texas born and raised serviceman returning to San Francisco from the Korean War. They met in the boarding house they both happened to be living in at the time and would eventually spend the rest of their lives together. As they lived their lives in San Francisco, in a quiet two bedroom flat on 23rd street, children would come quickly. Joan and Strawberry's first child (Strawberry was Silliman's nickname) was Margaret Lee – and she would share her birthdate with her mother's, June 16, 1955. Their second child was son, Howard, born just a year later on June 22, 1956. It was in 1958 that Joan and Strawberry would take the trip that would shape the rest of their lives together, a trip in the front of a Chevrolet Apache 10 Pick-up across the desert flats of California, Arizona and New Mexico to settle on a half section of farmland near Big Spring, Texas. As they worked the land and the cotton they grew together, Joan would be blessed with more children, Travis Stephen, born on December 18, 1962, and John G., born on June 2, 1967. Their children would grow and they would establish a homestead together that would become as much a part of them as the 47 years of marriage they would share. Eventually as the years rolled by, their children would grow up and move away to start families of their own, but Joan would continue to stay busy. She became involved in the POW/MIA program in the 1970's and 1980's. She would also start her own Antique doll business and became an expert on antique dolls and jewelry. Joan approached all aspects of her life with a quiet but fierce determination as well as with a breath of understanding and compassion and that would endeared her to all. Joan passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at her residence and was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret and by her husband, Strawberry. She is survived by four sons, six grandchildren and a wealth of love and admiration of all who knew her. Graveside funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2002, at Resthaven North Mausoleum in Midland with Pastor Ken Davis, of Seventh Day-Adventist Church officiating. The family suggests memorials to: Hospice House of Odessa, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas 79761. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home.,
